Bank complaints
Complain about a bank in Ireland
How to prepare a banking, card, account access, payment, or frozen-funds complaint before checking the FSPO route.
- financial-services escalation route
- FSPO
- key document to keep
- final response
- route warning
- not small-claims first
Check your dispute first
Answer a few questions to see your options before writing your complaint.
Check your optionsBanking and payment complaints need a different route from ordinary retailer disputes. Account access, card disputes, frozen funds, payment errors, fees, and regulated financial-services issues usually start with the provider's complaint process.
Use this guide for a complaint about your bank or payment account, including a disputed card payment. Check which business provides the service you are complaining about.
What to do next
- 1Complain to the bank or payment provider first and keep the complaint reference.
- 2Collect transaction IDs, statements, screenshots, support messages, charge details, and any final response.
- 3Check FSPO timing and eligibility before treating the issue as small claims.
Common bank complaint searches
Common searches include frozen funds, card payment dispute, account locked, bank will not answer, wrong charge, transfer problem, fraud support issue, and complaint final response.
Keep the complaint route clean
A banking complaint should ask for a specific correction, refund, explanation, account action, or written final response. Avoid mixing regulated financial-services issues with ordinary small-claims language.
Fees continue after you asked to close an account
Find the closure request and any bank acknowledgement. Check whether the bank confirmed closure, asked for a balance to be cleared or said another step was needed. An account you no longer use is not necessarily closed. Put subsequent fees beside those messages so the disputed period is clear.
Ask the bank to identify any outstanding closure requirement and explain each charge after your request. If you believe you completed every step, attach the confirmation or payment record. Request a decision on the fees and separate written confirmation of the account's final status.
For unresolved handling, use the bank's formal complaint process and check current FSPO guidance. A fee reversal does not prove an account is closed, and closure does not establish that a separate credit-report entry was inaccurate. Keep the final statement and check that any promised correction actually appears.

Can I take a bank to small claims?
Do not start there. Financial-services complaints usually need the provider complaint route and FSPO checks first.
What is the most important banking complaint evidence?
Keep the complaint reference, transaction IDs, dates, statements, support messages, and any final response letter.
