Correct an error on your credit report in Ireland

Found an incorrect balance, missed-payment entry or account status on your Central Credit Register report? Identify the error and request a specific amendment.

Check your dispute first

Answer a few questions to see your options before writing your complaint.

Check your options

If information on your Central Credit Register report appears wrong, obtain an up-to-date copy and identify the exact entry before contacting the lender. An amendment request should explain what is inaccurate, incomplete or out of date and what the record should show instead.

A disputed entry is not automatically an incorrect entry. An account you stopped using may still have an outstanding charge. Equally, proof that you paid an instalment may reveal an allocation or reporting error. The documents need to establish which explanation fits.

What to do next

  1. 1Identify the specific report entry and supporting evidence.
  2. 2Use the lender or Central Credit Register amendment route.
  3. 3Separate the correction request from any wider provider complaint.

Describe the entry precisely

Record the report date, lender, contract reference, reporting month and field you dispute. Compare them with statements, payment confirmations, settlement letters or the correspondence about the account's status. Avoid sending a general request to clear your credit history when only one entry is in question.

Check whether the issue starts in the lender's own records. If those remain wrong, later reporting may repeat the problem. Ask the lender to explain both the underlying account position and any reporting correction it proposes.

Use the amendment process

The Central Credit Register provides a route to request an amendment, and its borrower area explains the application requirements. You can also raise the issue directly with the lender. Keep the reference for each request and say if another organisation is already examining the same entry.

Explain the change sought in one sentence, then attach the evidence that supports it. Supply identification through the official application process. Avoid sending identity documents, a PPS number or a complete credit report to an unverified address merely because it offers credit repair.

Wording for a correction request

My report dated [date] records [entry] for [account and reporting month]. I believe this is incorrect because [specific fact]. The attached [document] shows [supporting detail]. Please investigate and, if confirmed, amend the entry to [requested correction], correct the underlying records and explain which reporting periods are affected.

Ask for a written outcome and retain both the original and a later report. Check the field that was disputed rather than assuming a general acknowledgement means the amendment has appeared. If the response disagrees with you, ask which document or calculation explains the difference.

Correction, explanation and a wider complaint

An explanatory statement is a separate option described by the Central Credit Register. It adds your context; it is not the same as an amendment. Read the publication conditions before submitting personal information that lenders may later see.

A complaint about the lender's handling may also need its formal complaint process and an FSPO jurisdiction check. Correcting an entry does not guarantee a loan, a particular lending decision or compensation. This is an information guide, not a credit-repair or finance-claims service.
