Complain about an insurance company in Ireland
How to prepare an insurance complaint about claims, cover, premiums, direct debits, broker service, or FSPO escalation.
- insurance escalation route
- FSPO
- core evidence
- policy
- route warning
- not small-claims first
Check your dispute first
Answer a few questions to see your options before writing your complaint.
Check your optionsInsurance complaints are regulated financial-services complaints, not ordinary small-claims-first disputes. The provider complaint route and FSPO timing matter.
Explain whether you are disputing cover, a premium, a payment or how the insurer handled a claim. Keep the policy and final response with your complaint.
What to do next
- 1Complain to the insurer or broker first and keep the complaint reference.
- 2Collect policy documents, claim correspondence, payment records, renewal messages, and any final response.
- 3Check FSPO guidance for unresolved insurance complaints.
Common insurance complaint searches
Common searches include claim refused, insurer not responding, direct debit problem, cover not active, renewal price dispute, broker complaint, and final response letter.
Cover cancelled over an alleged disclosure problem
Ask the insurer to identify the question it says was answered incorrectly, the answer recorded and the information it believes should have been supplied. Keep the proposal, online application or renewal questions that applied at the time. A later description of the question may leave out context that mattered when you answered.
Request a clear explanation of the action taken: cancellation from a date, treating the policy as void, changing terms or refusing a particular claim. These can have different consequences. Ask the insurer to explain the factual and legal basis and what records it has created or shared about that action.
If the insurer agrees to change its position, obtain written confirmation of the policy status, any cancellation-history correction and the separate claim decision. Removing a cancellation entry is not proof that a claim has been paid. Use the provider complaint and FSPO route where applicable; seek specialist advice if cover is urgently needed or the consequences are substantial.

Questions people ask
Can I use small claims against an insurer?
Do not start there. Insurance complaints usually need the provider complaint route and FSPO checks first.
